One example of an All-Pro fastening solution involved a manufacturer of zero-turn lawn mowers. The manufacturer had been using a button-socket screw and washer assembly to fasten a critical joint. Craig Schmucker, one of our fastening experts with over 30 years of experience, was present when the first mowers came off the assembly line. Craig observed that the washers were offsetting on the button-socket screw heads. He also recognized that the screws were zinc-plated steel, noting that after six months of exposure, these screws would become rusted.
Schmucker spoke to the customer and suggested that a stainless-steel button flange screw would better meet the application’s requirements. The customer went from buying two components to only buying one, simplifying the assembly process and reducing overall costs. In addition, All-Pro began painting the new screw heads prior to shipment to match the color of the mower.
In another example involving Schmucker, he noticed material waste on a customer’s assembly line, recounting that “they were using a cap, screw, and washer assembly.” The customer was using around 1,200 caps every day, and Craig noted that a lot of them ended up on the floor. He spoke with the customer and suggested replacing the assembly with a hinged cup washer would reduce the total amount of components used. Schmucker recounts that All-Pro “saved them ~27% in fastener costs.”
